The road from home to the uterus can be a very treacherous and arduous adventure for the sperm! Once in their new environment the last thing the sperm need is a hostile mucus.
Sperm tires easily and needs plenty of energy to be able to swim from the vagina to the uterus and then up the fallopian tubes where hopefully a princess egg will be waiting for her knight.
What Dangers Lurk in the Dark Waters of the Vagina?
- Hostile mucus. Firstly there is the pH of the mucus and the vagina. If it’s too acidic not only will the sperm be immobilized – unable to swim any further but they will die very soon.
- Secondly if there is not enough mucus around, sperm will feel like fish out of water and as you can imagine will not be able to reach the safety of the uterus.
- Thirdly if you used a lubricant to help things along the sperm will probably not make it either as the lubricants are deadly to the sperm.
- Fourthly if you use saliva to lubricate or if you have unfriendly bacteria overgrowth in your vagina, the sperm is at great risk of being injured or killed by the bad guys. Human mouth is a bacteria’s heaven and saliva has no shortage of bacteria (in fact the deadliest bite in terms of bacteria is human and not animal!).
As you can see the sperm have it though and there is no wonder so many have to attempt the journey in order for one to be successful!
What do sperm like?
- The optimal environment for the sperm is:
- Friendly mucus: an alkaline ph, it helps the sperm swim faster and nourishes it along the way.
- A lot of alkaline mucus is like diving into the deep blue ocean for the sperm. It ensures that the road to the uterus is smooth and effortless.
- No nasty bacteria to contend with – keeping the vagina healthy.
What to do if you have hostile mucus?
- Vaginas clean themselves and can take care of their environment alone providing the diet and the lifestyle are healthy.
- The gut flora (bacteria in your gut) also colonize your vagina. Eat sufficient probiotics or yoghurt with bifidus and acidophilus cultures to keep your vagina healthy.
- Wear cotton underwear and loose fitting clothes to allow your vagina to breathe.
- Always wipe from the front to back (and not the other way around) to prevent bacteria from the feaces from reaching the vagina.
- Moderate your intake of sugary foods, alcohol and white flour products to minimize the likelihood of thrush.
- Learn fertility awareness to be able to tell when your mucus is sperm friendly and when not.
- For lubrication use a longer foreplay and drink lots of water during the day to help your body produce natural lubrication.
- Don’t use Pre-Seed lubricant as it contains parabens. They are known endocrine disruptors and xenoestrogens and can predispose you to breast cancer and other hormone dependent cancers. These substances also disrupt fertility and predispose the baby in-utero to developing fertility and hormone issues later in life.
And remember if you want a complete guide with step-by-step instructions on how to use fertility awareness and dozens or more natural fertility strategies, see the “Natural Fertility Methods” that’s part of my “Natural Fertility Prescription Program”.

Hi Iva,
you recommend using pre-seed in this article. However, I noticed that preseed contains parabens. Is there any other alternative?
Hi Amy,
I didn’t know it contained parabens. Thanks for letting me know. Parabens are dangerous and should to be avoided. As far as I know the only other safe alternative is a long foreplay and drinking lots of water throughout the day to help your body produce more natural lubrication. Water, saliva etc… can all damage sperm, so your best bet is your own mucus.
Warm regards,
Iva
