“The findings… could lead to new treatment options for infertility”: New study reveals surprising link between muscles and fertility

Could your muscles be talking to your reproductive hormones? A fascinating new study suggests exactly that—shining light on a newly discovered body-brain connection that could reshape how we think about female fertility.

Researchers at McGill University have found that a protein produced in skeletal muscle—called myostatin—directly influences the pituitary gland’s release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a key player in egg development and fertility. Published in Science, the study shows that when myostatin levels were lowered in mice, puberty was delayed and fertility decreased. Restoring myostatin boosted FSH levels, suggesting muscle health may play a bigger role in reproductive function than previously thought.

While myostatin has been a target for muscle-growth drugs, this study urges caution. Blocking it may build muscle, but it might also disrupt fertility by suppressing FSH. Researchers also hinted that natural myostatin variations could help explain unexplained infertility, missed periods in athletes, or even the timing of puberty.

As a natural fertility expert, this is an exciting validation. We’ve long seen how strength training, overexercising, or dramatic body composition shifts affect hormone balance. “This study is proof that the body is brilliantly interconnected—what benefits one system may impact another,” as I often remind clients. Fertility isn’t isolated in the ovaries; it’s part of a whole-body dialogue.

This discovery adds weight to the belief that a balanced lifestyle, not just reproductive-focused treatments, supports fertility. The path to pregnancy may truly begin with listening to your body’s subtle signals.

Want to explore whether your body systems are working in harmony? Start by tuning in—not just to your cycle, but to your whole body’s rhythm.
