“Chronic inflammation and fertility”: why inflammation may persist longer than expected

When we talk about inflammation, it’s often described as something temporary—a short-term response that the body eventually resolves. But emerging research suggests that in some cases, inflammation may persist far longer than expected.

A 2023 study published in JCI Insight examined how immune cells behave in chronic inflammatory conditions. Researchers found that certain T cells don’t just activate in response to a trigger—they expand into dominant clones and remain stable in the body for years, continuing to signal inflammation over time rather than switching off .

This helps explain why inflammation can feel ongoing, even when obvious triggers have been addressed. Instead of being purely reactive, the immune system can develop patterns that keep inflammation active in the background. Over time, this low-grade inflammatory state may influence multiple systems in the body.

From a fertility perspective, chronic inflammation can affect more than we realize. It may interfere with hormonal signaling, egg quality, and the delicate immune balance needed for implantation. If the immune system remains in a heightened state, it can make it more difficult for the body to shift into a receptive, supportive environment for pregnancy.

“Inflammation isn’t always a temporary response—sometimes it becomes a pattern the body holds onto.”

Understanding this shifts the approach from simply reducing symptoms to gently supporting the immune system back toward balance. For many, this can be a meaningful step in addressing underlying factors that may be affecting fertility.
